Flutter + Whirly Blooms = Flirly!

Posted by Gerri Robinson on

Interesting title?  Did I get your attention?  Let me explain what I mean and as an added bonus, this ultimately is a FREE pattern too!

I used to be a Pop Culture junkie.  I know, I know.  Key word - used to be.  Not so much anymore.  Back in my Pop Culture days when 2 celebrities would start dating, the entertainment media would merge their names together to form a new name for the newly dating couple.

Well, I used that same concept when I was mindlessly sketching (the above design) one day when I paused and thought, hhmmm this design looks familiar.

It was familiar because part of the block can be seen in my #1 selling pattern, Flutter (above) and the other part of the block can be seen in Whirly Blooms (below)

I liked the design enough to create it and share it with you.  Meet Flirly (below)!  See what I did there?

Flirly is the combination of the best parts of Flutter and Whirly Blooms.

Flirly uses the CENTER Elongated Star Block from Flutter and the Paddle Wheel Block from Whirly Blooms PLUS the addition of the black Half Square Triangle in the corner.

Here's an easier illustration to really see and understand the combination below:

I know I mentioned the word FREE in my opening paragraph.  Yes, that is true IF you already own BOTH Flutter and Whirly Blooms patterns.  You do need BOTH patterns to understand the general construction of Flirly!

To make it a bit easier, below are the Material and Cutting List but again, you still need BOTH the Flutter and Whirly Blooms patterns for the block and quilt construction.

Flirly Material List

Background:  2-3/4 yards (Confetti Cotton Cloud)

Blocks:  (20) 1/8 yard OR (20) Fat Eighths of Assorted Prints

Center Stars AND Corner Triangles:  7/8 yard

Binding:  5/8 yard

Backing:  3-5/8 yard

Planted Seed Designs Triangle-in-a-Square Ruler

 -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Flirly Cutting List

From the Background fabric, cut:

  • (80) 4-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles
  • (3) 2-1/2" x width of fabric (WOF) strips for the Triangle-in-a-Square
  • (400) 2-1/2" squares

From EACH assorted print, cut:

  • (4) 4-1/2" squares
  • (4) 4-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles

From the black print, cut:

  • (4) 2-1/2" x width of fabric (WOF) strips for the Triangle-in-a-Square
  • (100) 2-1/2" squares.

 From the binding fabric, cut:

  • (7) 2-1/2" strips

Well, does it make a bit more sense now that I broke it out for you along with the block illustration?  I hope so because I'd love to see some Flirly quilts fluttering around on social media.

Here's a few "pretty" pictures to inspire you to create your own Flirly from Whirly Blooms and Flutter too!

Missing one or both patterns?  Here's the quick link to Whirly Blooms here and to Flutter hereIf you're missing the Triangle-in-a-Square Ruler, we have those too right here!

I would LOVE to know what you think of the NEW Flirly design!  Would you make one?  Let me know in the comments below.

Happy Flutter, Whirly or Flirly quilting!

  • Gerri,
I LOVE your Flirly design and those fabrics!! Do you have a single pattern for Flirly? I would rather buy one rather than two….
    Maybe a kit???

  • Hi Gerri, All three are lovely designs. Clever how the two original designs merged or evolved into something new. Your creativity is bountiful. Congratulations on release of Heartfelt collection.
