RBD Block Challenge: Pinwheel Star by Amy Smart

Posted by Gerri Robinson on

I've been opening my posts with its Week "x" of the RBD Block Challenge but I just realized its really not "weeks" since we get the LAST week of EACH month off to catch up; and NEXT week is catch up week!

Technically, you'll get TWO weeks (3/23 AND 3/30) to catch up because the number of weeks per month varies.

Sooooo, if you've been on the fence about joining along, you'll have TWO weeks to get 6 blocks done before we turn the calendar to April 6th when we share a new block!  How's that for a nudge of encouragement!

Block 6, Pinwheel Star, was designed by Amy Smart of Diary of a Quilter!  A fellow quilter who, like me, LOVES stars and pinwheels and Amy was able to capture that in her Pinwheel Star Block.

In reading through Amy's blog here, I realized she too, just like me, enjoys designing with Half Square Triangles because of all the flexibility they offer her in designing.

In fact, she shares several tips and tricks on how she achieves her "perfect" half square triangles here!

You know what my #1 tip is for ALL my piecing especially Half Square Triangles?  Check out my video here!

Without further ado, introducing my Gem Stone Pinwheel Star Block . . . . .

in Gem Stones Blizzard Blue for the blocks and Gem Stones Purple Heart for the ground.

We're a little over a third of the way in this challenge and would you believe I really have NO plan on what Gem Stones Bright  colors I'll use from block to block?

True statement!  I'm trusting the Gem Stones Bright palette, as a whole, looks and works so well together because of this gorgeous Feathered Star quilt below from my quilting friend, Peggy True.  And of course, I designed the palette ;)

Peggy used the ENTIRE Gem Stones Bright collection in this beauty coupled with Confetti Cotton Cloud for the ground!  Truly spectacular!

If you're all caught up with the 6 RBD Challenge Blocks and you're "looking" for something else to "Sew Along", check out what my dear friend, Jill Finley of Jillily Studio has her followers working on.

Gracious Grove!  Isn't it absolutely beautiful?!  Jill steps you through each block in detail on her blog here!

And Jill is even offering it as a kit here if you want to make it just like hers!

Or if you want to purchase the pattern to make it "sometime in the future", here's the link for the pattern here.

Even though the next 2 weeks is catch up week, I'll be back here next week with something new and exciting to share!

Happy Quilting!

Gerri
